Christchurch Boxer Nort Beauchamp hangs up gloves after 16-year career
Thailand-born New Zealander Nort Beachamp has officially retired after a long career in amateur and professional boxing with his last fight on Wednesday against Youssef Dib in Australia.
After an intense battle with Youssef Dib on Wednesday, Nort Beauchamp has announced he is retiring from competing as a professional boxer. Beauchamp had his son with him Kwahli Beauchamp who is a two-time national amateur New Zealand champion in his own right.
Nort Beauchamp began his boxing career as an amateur boxer at 22. In his amateur career, he has had 30 fights in his amateur career, winning the New Zealand national amateur championship twice. He was part of the New Zealand international boxing team during the time New Zealand had some of its best boxers in history including Joseph Parker, Reece Papuni, David Aloua and more.
Beauchamp made his professional boxing debut in 2013 when he took on Richard Campbell, winning by Unanimous Decision in the welterweight division. One of the biggest highlight reels of his early career was when he knocked out cold kickboxer Isaac Savage. This created a knockout video that spread across Facebook.
He maintained an undefeated streak until 2015 when he took on Cairo George for the New Zealand national (NZNBF version) and IBO Asia Pacific Welterweight titles. He lost the fight by a technical split decision. Technical being the fight having to stop early due to an accidental headbutt causing a severe cut to Cairo George, which means stopping the fight and going to the scorecards.
He would move down a couple of weight divisions, fighting at Lightweight. In 2016, he won his first title when he defeated Gearoid Clancy in Australia for the WBF International Lightweight title. They would have a rematch in 2017 where Beauchamp would win the IBO Oceania-Orient Lightweight title. After having a nine-win winning streak, Beauchamp would suffer the next loss in his career against Kye MacKenzie.Â
Despite his loss, he turned it around in 2018 with one of the biggest wins of his career when he defeated WBA-ranked boxer Joel Brunker for the IBO Oceania-Orient Super Featherweight title. It was around this time he would receive one of the biggest accomplishments of his career where he received a WBC ranking the 29th in the Super Featherweight division.
In 2019, Beauchamp was awarded the New Zealand national (NZPBA version) Lightweight title. Due to the lack of national opponents in New Zealand in the Lightweight division, the NZPBA commissioning body awarded the title to Beauchamp, making him the first Lightweight New Zealand champion since 2000.
In the last 4 years of Beauchamp's career, he fought some of the best boxers in the Australasia region including Richie Hadlow, Brock Jarvis, Sam Goodman, Chaiwat Buatkrathok, Youssef Dib.
Beauchamp leaves an incredible legacy showing it is possible to have a boxing career in New Zealand at such a light weight. He also has his gym Champ Nation, his son Kwahli Beauchamp and an impressive career where he can claim he has never been knocked down.
